Coppell Texas Hardwood flooring Company, Christine Snyder agent of Carpet Direct offers some hints on how to choose flooring for your home.

Choosing what type of flooring you need can be confusing, there is so much information out there and sometimes it’s contradictory. The bottom line is no one can decide what’s best for your house better than you. So we have compiled some questions to help you make an educated choice when choosing between hardwoods, carpeting, tile, or laminate flooring.

  • What is your personal preference? Is style more important to you or comfort? Some people demand hardwood appeal for their home while others really love the soft feel of carpet under their feet.
  • Where will the flooring be placed? Damp areas, high traffic areas? You’ll need to take a good look at where you want flooring placed. You may want to choose a tile for areas such as a kitchen or porch where you can expect water spills. How about heavy traffic areas, carpeting will wear down sooner than expected in high traffic areas. You may want to consider a mix of carpeting and hard woods, for example hardwoods for the hallways and carpeting for the bedrooms. (Tip: But all flooring, carpet or wood can last a very long time when properly maintained!)
  • Do you have children? The first time your toddler spills grape juice on your carpeting or gives the carpet a haircut can be upsetting. A lot of people choose hardwoods to avoid these scenarios but you may also want to consider safety and comfort. Children fall a lot and run around barefoot constantly, would you rather have them falling on carpet or hardwood? Also, heat and cold will be absorbed by the carpet removing it from you and your child’s feet.
  • Are their allergy issues in your family? Carpeting collects dust but it can also act as somewhat of an air filter, trapping the allergens. If you have a good HEPA vacuum and have your carpets cleaned regularly you should not have a problem. With hardwoods the dust collects on the top of the floors and gets knocked around frequently. If you do go with hardwoods make sure to dust frequently.
  • Do you have pets? Expensive hardwoods and two or three dogs can spell disaster. The dog’s nails can scratch the floors up on a daily basis. If you have dogs, keep their nails trim or consider a product such as Konecto which has hard wood appeal but is made of a durable vinyl, or maybe even laminate flooring very durable for children and pets. Some wood floors now have an aluminum oxide finish which prevents scratches. Ask your Carpet Direct agent about select finishes. (Alamo has an Aluminum oxide finish)
  • What is my budget? Hardwoods can definitely be more expensive. You may want to consider how long you plan on staying in your home. Will you be putting your home on the market anytime soon; hardwoods have great sale appeal? (Keep in mind that Carpet Direct helps you save 30%-60% off retail)

After taking some of these important considerations into mind you can decide which flooring appeals to you the most and which is most practical for your home. The staff at Carpet Direct will be happy to discuss with you all your considerations and help you find a product that fits with your lifestyle.

Coppell Carpet Cleaning Company, Christine Snyder owner of Snyder’s Carpet Care discusses dust and allergens in a Part 2 series on dust mites.

On the last blog we promised you a part two of the dust mite saga. Yuck, they are in your carpeting and all over your house and the worst part, they are an allergen. There are ways however to combat dust, dust mites and other allergens in your entire house.

We already discussed frequent vacuuming and carpet cleaning for your flooring. Don’t forget about vacuuming or dusting those base boards, especially under the bed. Your furniture can also benefit from a good cleaning. Your couch and chairs can all collect dust and allergens year after year and few people think of cleaning them. If you’ve had the same recliner in front of the TV for years you may want to check with your carpet cleaning professional about a good cleaning.

Some other place to combat dust:

  • Beds are the most common place for dust mites to be found. Did you know that 10% of the weight of a two year old pillow can be compromised of dust mites? You can however purchase dust mite covers for mattresses and pillows.
  • Stuffed Animals! Little Susie’s favorite Teddy Bear could be harboring a lot of allergens. When she is not looking put the stuffed animals in a sealed plastic bag and freeze it. After freezing you may want to give it a once over with the vacuum hose.
  • Sheets and Bedding. You should be washing your bedding in hot water at least every two weeks.
  • Air Filters. Make sure to clean air filters frequently. If anyone in your family is showing symptoms of allergies try a special allergen filter.

For most people dust mites are not going to prove an immediate threat but for a lot of people they do induce an allergic reaction. Be mindful that individuals are rarely allergic to just the dust mites; they probably have a combination of allergies such as pollens, mold and pet dander. All of our suggestions will be helpful in fighting allergies and improving the air quality of your home. Now let’s get cleaning!

To free your carpeting and furniture from allergens please give us a call at Snyder’s Carpet Care.

Coppell Carpet Cleaning Company, Christine Snyder owner of Snyder’s Carpet Care discusses Dust Mite allergens Part 2 and how to reduce them in your carpeting.  We have been providing quality Carpet Care in North Texas for over 8 years.  Serving both residential and commercial clients.  Our services extend to Cedar Hill, Desoto, Duncanville, Midlothian, Grand Prairie,  Red Oak, Ovilla, Arlington, Mansfield, Frisco, Plano, Richardson, Carrollton, Coppell, Lewisville, Flowermound and Dallas county residents.

Coppell Carpet Cleaning Company, Christine Snyder owner of Snyder’s Carpet Care discusses Dust Mite allergens and how to reduce them in your carpeting.

Your carpeting can be the perfect environment for breeding dust mites and common household allergens. Particles dropped on your floor such as dust, pollen, dirt and other debris get caught in the fibers of your carpeting. Dust mites actually feed on dead shed human skin which amounts for a large part of household dust. Carpeting provides a banquet table for a feast of dust mites. As your family walks around on the carpet, they stir up the settled bits of allergen, causing them to become air-borne. It is when the dust becomes air-borne, that the allergens are easily inhaled and trigger an allergic reaction.

Just thinking about dust mites in your carpet and home can make anyone cringe! So now that you are completely horrified and afraid to walk on your carpet lets discuss some ways to reduce allergens in your carpeting. Many studies have been done on dust mites and the amounts of dust mites in your home. Few studies have been done on all the products out there to reduce dust mites, so finding solutions can be a little tricky.

One study that was done in South Florida did have significant findings in terms of vacuuming and carpet cleaning. They chose a school with carpeting for the test environment. Levels of allergens were measured before the test and after. With routine vacuuming and carpet cleaning they were able to reduce the amount of airborne allergens. Another key element that came out of this study was proper vacuuming. The study tested vacuums with filters and without and found that unfiltered vacuums could release airborne allergens up to four inches off the floor. Please note that using HEPA vacuums are recommended, non HEPA vacuums can tend to knock around the dust making it airborne and creating a worse problem.

For those of you with wood flooring, vinyl and or tile you are not off the hook. The fibers in carpeting actually trap the dust mite allergens, you’ll need to take extra care to damp mop the floors and keep them free of dust.

Snyder’s Carpet Care recommends the following ideas for keeping your home and carpeting free of allergens:

  • A HEPA Vacuum
  • Airborne Filters- Look for anti-microbial products
  • Damp mop wood, vinyl and tile flooring
  • Use dehumidifiers to keep your humidity below 50%

Our next blog will discuss the issue of dust mites and allergens as they affect your entire house. Keeping the carpets free of allergens is just one component of the problem. Frisco Carpet Cleaning Company, Christine Snyder owner of Snyder’s Carpet Care talks about ways to make environmentally friendly flooring choices.

Earth Day was celebrated last week and it seems as though Going Green is a hot topic this month! It can be a little overwhelming at times to figure out what is the right thing to do in terms of the environment. Just when you think you got it down someone gives you new information that you’re doing it all wrong. For instance, did you know that it’s considered more environmentally friendly to take your car to the car wash then to do it at home? The car wash will use less water then you will and the runoff from the chemicals and dirt won’t go into your neighbor’s yard.

So this week we’ve tried to pin down some information on green carpeting and flooring. Yes, there are even environmental flooring concepts to add to your list of socially responsible tasks.

Choosing a company for any type of green project can be difficult. Let’s face it; any company can say they are eco-friendly.  You’ll want to look at some key factors. Does the company appear to be socially responsible and do they attempt to manufacture products in an environmentally friendly way. How about their distribution process and packaging? Companies that use local products for example are seen as more environmentally responsible. How about the products; are they made with renewable materials or are they recyclable? One of our featured products of the month was Konecto, while this is vinyl and not a renewable material they do attempt to use recycled materials where they can.  Also, check the toxicity levels of any flooring. Bamboo is a popular environmentally friendly material, yet you’ll have to make sure the formaldehyde content is low; some levels exceed indoor air quality standards.

Popular flooring products and how they hold up to eco-friendly standards:

  • Carpeting- Green carpets and area rugs are low-emitting and made from natural fibers (i.e., wool, jute) or with a high content of recycled synthetic fibers. Area rugs versus wall to wall carpeting are recommended but you have to take into account your personal preferences and the design of your home. The carpet industry is addressing environmental concerns and we should see more and more green friendly products on the market.
  • Linoleum is made from linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, tree resins, ground limestone and pigments, all pressed onto a jute backing. Linoleum is also easy to clean and requires less water for cleaning. One small environmental setback about this product is that it is typically made in Europe and needs transport, increasing the use of fuels and adding to pollution.
  • Stone is of course renewable and recyclable. Eco-friends suggest buying locally, avoiding imported stone and excess transportation. Also, look for stone that does not have to be sealed. If using a sealer, select a low-VOC product (less than 200 g/L of VOCs, per SCAQMD Rule 1113).
  • Tile is made from durable renewable or recycled materials. Again, it is advised to avoid imports and buy locally, thus cutting down on fuel and the overall impact of transport.
  • Wood Flooring is a natural material, renewable resource and durable. Please see our blog on Alamo for a flooring company that maintains green practices.

All of these environmentally friendly efforts are done to reduce our carbon footprint on the earth. Carbon imprint is a way to measure your activities and the impact they have on the environment.  Your best effort can be made by educating yourself as a consumer and trying to do your best. As in some of the examples above you’ll see that even the best environmentally friendly products can have their downsides. (i.e., formaldehyde use) To calculate your carbon footprint visit http://www.nature.org/initiatives/climatechange/calculator/.

Cedar Hill Carpet Cleaning Company, Christine Snyder owner of Snyder’s Carpet Care offers tips on how to keep your carpets in excellent shape.
Carpeting can be one of the more expensive items in your home, yet a lot of us fail to maintain our investment properly. Here are a few simple tips that can help you prolong the life and beauty of your carpets.

•    Vacuum Weekly. If you have lots of family and or animals, then vacuum daily. This may seem like overdoing it to some, but think about the everyday dirt and grease that can land up on our carpets. Vacuuming consistently can decrease the chances of dirt, pollution and grease getting ground into the carpeting.
•    Attend to spots as soon as possible. Do not leave spots sitting. Some stains such as pet vomit can sit in your carpet and the acidic levels can wear away at your carpet. You may even try a simple solution of vinegar and water to remove that stain right away.
•     Steam clean carpets at least once a year. Heavier traffic areas every 6 months. It is also a good idea to show your carpet cleaner where spills or heavy traffic have taken place.

•    Scotchguard at least once a year. Ask your carpet cleaning company to do this for you. Scotchguarding does not change the look of your carpet but will repel spills, resist soil and block stains. This will also limit reappearing spots.

•     Have your air ducts cleaned to reduce filtration soil. Dirty airducts can eventually result in a film of dirt on your carpets called Filtration soil and can be very difficult to remove. Especially around the edges of the wall and carpet, if you are noticing a darker tint near the wall this may be due to dirty airducts.

Make sure to interview your carpet cleaning company, you’ll want a company that is familiar with working on high end carpeting and keeping your home and belongings in excellent shape. Ask them a few simple questions such as who will be coming out to service the carpet and how long has he or she been working for the company? You don’t need an eighteen year old with no experience working with heavy equipment near your grandmas antique vase! Hire professionals.

Konnecto Flooring Video

Superior water resistance lets you install in high moisture areas such as a kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room. Konecto is an easy to clean no wax floor. You can expect your flooring to be carefree and durable for twenty five years in a residential setting and ten years in commercial. The warranty is also excellent extending from 7-15 years depending on which Konecto product you have chosen.
We have had customers wanting wood flooring in their kitchen or bathroom but are afraid of moisture affecting the wood. Konecto is a great choice for these types of rooms, as it is made of vinyl and water resistant. This does not mean you should wash it down with a water hose, but a little more moisture than usual room won’t hurt. Another fabulous idea we have seen is using it for enclosed porches that may get a lot of wet dirty feet traffic. It can give your porch a decorative indoor look and you won’t have to worry about your dogs muddy feet or the wet cub scouts that just came back from camping.

Embrace the Simplicity

Konecto Planks is so easy to install, anyone can become a do-it-yourselfer. Simply peel, place and press. Each plank attaches to the planks beside it – not the floor beneath it – so there is no need for complicated tools or adhesives. Installs over virtually any sub-floor on all levels of the home.
If you are interested in self installation Konecto may be perfect for you. It is not only easy to install but easy to replace should you need to replace part or whole at any point. Konecto uses a lock-connect technology which is as easy as positioning the planks and adhering them with a special adhesive. Of course, if you are not a do it yourself kind of person the folks at Carpet Direct  can help you find a qualified installer. In fact, Konecto costs about $1.00 a square foot to install and most hard surface flooring is $2.50 a square foot.

The installation process is as easy as 1-2-3.
1.    Position Planks
2.    Place strips together and press
3.    Measure, Score, Snap to Trim

See the Konecto website for more details on warranty and installation information. www.konectousa.com

Cedar Hill Carpet Cleaning Company, Christine Snyder owner of Snyder’s Carpet Care offers tips on spring cleaning.
We have all heard the old adage about spring cleaning. It’s not always just an excuse for moms to get the whole family cleaning; there are reasons to spring clean.  One of those reasons is that April and May flowers bring dust and pollen into our homes. Not to mention that we probably haven’t had our windows open in months, trapping in dirty air. It’s time to freshen up!
A Cedar Hill Carpet Cleaning company recommends some Spring cleaning tips that will also help your carpet and flooring:

  • HVAC filters – Your filters should be cleaned once a month, especially if you have lots of animals and in the summer. Good quality filters will reduce air pollutants, pollutants that can even land up in your carpeting.
  • Control moisture and humidity – You should have a humidity level at 30 percent or below which prevents the growth of mold and the infestation of dust mites; two of the most common allergens. You can by an inexpensive tool such as a hygrometer to test the levels of humidity. Low humidity or dryness can even affect your wood flooring by causing shrinkage.
  • Increase vacuum frequency – Giving your home a good spring vacuuming never hurt, go under couches and in corners that you usually may ignore. You’ll be removing a lot of unnecessary dry dirt materials which can get ground into your carpeting.  It can’t hurt to do a once over the furniture as well.
  • Use high efficiency filter bags - High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) double-lined vacuum filter bags filter out 99% of particles decreasing respiratory irritation. Especially if someone in your family suffers from asthma or allergies you’ll need this.
  • Clean your carpets- Dust, dust mites and allergens can build up over time in your carpet. A carpet can gather up to eight times its weight in dust. Getting your carpet cleaning company to pay a visit will give a more thorough cleaning than the vacuum.

Of course spring cleaning has a great psychological calming effect as well. Opening up the windows and getting a treatment on your carpets can refresh the whole house. You may even want to spray some Febreeze around, spring scent of course. Don’t forget to check when your scotch guarding was last done; you may be in need of a treatment after winter traffic has taken its toll on your flooring. Feel free to check with the folks at Snyder’s Carpet Care and get your recommended six month carpet cleaning, which should really freshen things up around your home.

Cedar Hill Carpet Cleaning Company Christine Snyder owner of Snyder’s Carpet Care provides all types of floor care.  We have been providing quality Carpet Care in North Texas for over 8 years.  Serving both residential and commercial clients.  Our services extend to Cedar Hill, Desoto, Duncanville, Midlothian, Grand Prairie, Red Oak, Ovilla, Arlington, Mansfield and Dallas county residents.

Cedar Hill Carpet Repair Company, Christine Snyder owner of Snyder’s Carpet Care offers tips on how to keep your carpets in excellent shape.

If you are like most people a big stain or damage to your carpet has you believing that your entire room of carpeting is destroyed. When the home is wall to wall carpeting it can throw homeowners into a further panic. There are many solutions that can help you save your carpet, either do-it- yourself solutions or by calling your carpet cleaning professional.

  • Stains- One of the keys to stains is early removal. Blot the stain with a clean wet rag, keep using the wet towel until you no longer see the stain in the towel. Different stains may require different techniques.  A mild spot remover can help but call your carpet cleaning professional to find out what they recommend.  To much detergent can cause residue and dirt is attracted to residue making the carpet look like it has a big spot when in fact it it just left over soap in the carpet.
  • Patching Burns or Holes- Often thought of as unfixable, burns or holes can be handled by your carpet cleaning company. A burn will first be cleaned, trimmed and then patched. Often a patch can be obtained from an old sample of the carpet or taken from a closet or hidden spot. Please note, for that occasional stain that is impossible to get out patching may be a solution.
  • Carpet Seams- Unfortunately, if a carpet is not installed properly seams may start to show up after time. Your carpet cleaning professional can handle this as well. Seams will only grow worse over time and can lead to tripping and unnecessary injuries.
  • Wax stains can be removed by using a low set iron over a very wet white towel. (Test your carpet first for heat resistance in a closet or hidden place.) If the wax was dark colored you will need to discuss this with your carpet cleaning professional. Some colored wax will die the carpet and can be hard to remove. Tip: Do not let the towel dry out and do not leave the iron on the carpet for too long because it can cause delamination if not done properly.
  • Remodeling- Have you remodeled and pulled up some of the carpeting or had flood damage and needed to pull up the carpet? You can have a service called power- stretching, which includes properly tacking the carpet down. For you do-it-your-selfer’s there is a tool you can rent to help you stretch your carpet or remove wrinkles. Tip: When doing carpet stretching your self their is a technic to applying the proper pressure to the carpet as it is stretched, if not done properly you can rip and ruin your carpet.  A good carpet cleaning company and or installer will repair your carpet properly and with the proper tools; and will guarantee that it is done correctly and save you a lot of time and hassle.
  • Pet Stains- These should be removed immediately. Do not for instance, leave vomit with digestive acids, sitting on your carpet. If you are noticing a particular color of the vomit such as red you may want to try changing the pet food to a more natural color.  Pet stains can be a homeowners worst night mare.  Leaving them in the carpet is not good.  The best tip is to get a wet towel and get up as much of the urine as possible then always keep a spray bottle mix of vinegar and water and apply to the stain and blot that as well.  The vinegar will help kill bacteria and help with smell and is natural so will not harm your animals. Please call me with additional tip on removing Pet Urine Stains.  972-898-3886

A Cedar Hill Carpet Repair Company recommends that you check with your carpet care professional first before considering your carpet a loss. If a total loss is the case, some home owner’s insurance policies will pay for new carpeting. Snyder’s Carpet Care can also help you with your replacement flooring needs. Or if the kids have spilled one too many Kool- aids or Fido has had one too many accidents you may want to consider wood flooring!
