Dallas limo true romance story

 Dallas limo true romance story

By DARLA ATLAS / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News

Andrew Marshall isn’t the type of guy to rush into marriage.

He’d known Leah Johnson when they were both students at Texas A&M, and they’d begun long-distance dating when he lived in Houston and she was in Carrollton. But the timing wasn’t right.

“It maybe took me a little bit longer” than Leah to consider marriage, admits Andrew, 27. “I really wanted to be in the same city and have a normal dating relationship without having to worry about the travel and all of that.”

But after he did move, landing an engineering job for Atmos Energy in Dallas in 2007, “things just started getting better and better,” he says.

Last September, Andrew was finally ready to propose – and ready to go all-out with it.

Leah, meanwhile, had no idea. On Sept. 6, she was simply excited about her birthday. She’d hoped Andrew would plan something nice and fun, but he didn’t seem all that into it.

“All he was doing was asking me a bunch of questions,” recalls Leah, 25, who works in public relations for Sunwest Communications. “He’d say, ‘Send me some ideas, send me whoever you want me to invite, and I guess I’ll put something together.’ I was growing more and more frustrated by the day.”

What she didn’t know was that he’d been working on a plan for almost two months. “The horrible irony of it,” Andrew says, “was that Leah was really kind of sad about me not doing anything for her birthday.”

But oh, was he doing something! That afternoon, Leah went to lunch with a co-worker, who seemed unusually fidgety.

Once they got to the office, “she’s still acting weird,” Leah recalls thinking. Also weird was the fact that a driver from Dallas Limo had arrived – and her co-workers told her to leave with him. Her reaction was simple: “What? What?”

Her friend then gave her a gift bag with clues for the scavenger hunt she’d be embarking on, along with her camera and a blinking Happy Birthday button.

Once inside the limo, she opened a card from Andrew. It read: “I’ve arranged a special day for you. Just relax, have fun and take a lot of pictures.”

First stop: Nordstrom at the Galleria, where Leah was instructed to ask for a woman who turned out to be a personal shopper.

“Andrew had met with her ahead of time and picked out dresses, shoes, handbags for me to try on,” she says. “I got to spend about two hours playing dress-up. Just like Pretty Woman. Except for our totally different occupations.”

After she settled on a dress and accessories, Andrew had arranged for alterations to be done as she continued her adventure.

The limo then stopped at Red Lobster (”Anybody who knows Leah also knows she loves Red Lobster,” Andrew says), where she was instructed to take a picture holding two crustaceans from the tank. Other stops included Topz Healthier Burger Grill, the site of their first date; Quorum Park, at a bench where they’d once had a meaningful talk; Fox and Hound, where they met one night when he was in town from Houston; and The Flying Saucer, where they’d spent St. Patrick’s Day.

She then was driven back to Nordstrom so she could change into her dress and get her makeup done.

“The whole time I’m thinking, ‘It’s my birthday, and I have the best boyfriend ever,’ ” she says.

Leah was then driven to Chamberlain’s Fish Market Grill, the final stop. At the door, she told the staffer she was there to meet a big group.

“I was taken back to a smaller room, and there were just three tables there,” Leah says. “I didn’t know anybody at the first table or the second table, and at the third table there’s just Andrew.”

Leah shrugged off the fact that her friends weren’t there, assuming they’d be meeting them later. Over dinner, she showed Andrew pictures from her fun day.

“He’s not talking a whole lot,” Leah recalls. “I’m thinking, ‘Oh, he’s such a good listener. I love him.’ ”

“I was really nervous,” Andrew says.

A manager then stopped by to ask how everything was.

“Great!” Leah told him. “It’s my birthday, and it’s been the best birthday ever.”

As soon as the manager walked away, the lights in the room went out. Leah’s reaction: “I know it’s late, but they don’t have to turn the lights off to get us to leave.”

Looking back, she laughs at her cluelessness: “I promise I’m not a dumb girl! I’d had 10 hours of misdirection and confusion.”

The next thing she knew, Andrew was on the floor. Leah whispered that maybe he should get up. A woman sitting near her said, “I think he’s proposing.”

Sure enough, Andrew was holding a lighted ring box. “The only thing I could see,” Leah says, “was his face and the ring.”

Andrew then started talking, building up to his proposal. “I got most of it out, but my head was just kind of spinning,” he says.

So was Leah’s. At one point, “I realized he’d stopped talking completely and was waiting for an answer,” she recalls. “I finally got out, ‘Yes.’ ”

With that, the lights came back on and the champagne flowed for everyone in the room.

The wedding is set for Oct. 17. But for now, Leah is still glowing about her engagement.

“I have the most incredible storybook proposal,” she says. “I can’t help but smile every time I think about it.”

She’s created a photo album of the day, “so I’ll be able to tell my kids and grandkids what a great job he did. And how loved I felt.”

Dallas limo provides news on Reunion Arena going down

Dallas limo provides news on Reunion Arena going down.

By MARK NORRIS / The Dallas Morning News

Reunion Arena went down without much of fight. The venerable sports arena took one final breath, then collapsed inwards in a wave-like formation at 3:30 p.m on Nov 17, 2009

Roof of Dallas’ Reunion Arena collapses during final stage of demolition

The roof caved in about 3:30 p.m.

The process was expected to take as many as three days, but the roof wound up coming down about eight hours into its demolition process.

“Until you know how the structure is going to react, it could have taken longer or it could have come down like it did,” said Martha Welch, senior architect for the city of Dallas, who said the demolition went as planned.

Workers got the roof to collapse after hammering away the arena’s two northeast supporting columns. The roof sheared off five of the other six columns, two in each corner, during the collapse.

Welch said when the first column was taken out, it caused the base frame of the roof structure to pop and bow. When workers took out the second column, the main frame was pulled and then buckled — triggering the collapse of the entire roof.

Even with warnings to stay away from the site, some passers-by stopped to take a look. Some were walking or biking along the Houston Street Viaduct, including one man walking his dog backward in order to keep an eye on the arena.

“[I am here] because I can,” Kirkpatrick said. “I’ve been watching [the process] for months, and want to see it finished.”

A&R Demolition will spend the next month removing the steel from the roof for recycling and resale.

Debris from the 29-year-old arena should be cleared, and the site should be leveled and made into a grassy field by next March.
