Foamboard Options and Attributes - Know your Foamboard

Foamboard comes in a relatively wide range of products with significantly different characteristics and stylistic attributes.

Here we provide an overview of the main options that exist when considering foam board for photographic framing and mounting.

Foamboard with Memory vs without Memory: Foamboard can have a memory or can lack a memory. This refers to the ability of the foam board to rebound from minor deformations that occur during the cutting or mounting process. Foamboard without memory can result in a pinched edge when cut which can cause the edges to become slightly rounded. This can be a special problem if the cutting blade is not maintained with an optimally sharp edge.  During the mounting process it is very easy to press on a foam board and leave an indentation. These indentations will not repair themselves if you are using foam board without a memory capability. Foamboard with memory will result in cleaner, crisper edges and will be more forgiving during the mounting process if you inadvertently place pressure on the surface. Denting and dimpling will not result from minor pressure applied during the cutting and mounting process.

Acid-Free Foamboard: Acid-Free foam board is an excellent choice when mounting for conservation framing. Acid-Free foam board provides an acid-free barrier between the mounting board and the artwork. Acid-Free foam board has the same memory and rigidity as standard foam board with memory.
