Moving Your Pets
Your pets need your special care and handling when being transported to your new home. Here are a few tips on moving them.
Dogs and Cats
Dogs and cats can either ride in your car or can be shipped by air. Taking them in the car is fairly simple, but be prepared to clean up after them if they get carsick. Be sure to bring along their food and water and dishes for each. Stop every couple of hours at rest stops to walk dogs on leashes (more often for puppies). Remember to use a leash; even well behaved dogs may run away at rest stops because traveling and strange places make them nervous and upset.
Call ahead to find hotels or motels that take pets. Travel guides, area chambers of commerce, and large hotel and motel chains that publish brochures are good sources of information.
If you’re flying to your new home, your cat or dog can ride in the baggage compartment. Call the airline in advance for regulations on vaccination certification and traveling containers. If the trip is long or your pet is nervous, it may be a good idea to call your vet ahead of time for pet tranquilizers. Tranquilizers are administered just before you leave for the airport. It’s also a good idea to place a piece of your clothing in the animal’s box so that it is contented by your scent.
If you would like your pet to be shipped by air without you, you will need to make certain someone is on the other end to pick it up at the airport and take care of it until you arrive. If no one you know will be able to do this, you can arrange for a kennel in that area to do it for you. Many kennels can even pick up air shipped pets and then care for them for several days if you’re concerned about your animals being in the way during the move.
Small Animals
Hamsters, birds, mice, rabbits, and guinea pigs can be transported in your car fairly easily. Use their usual cages, unless the cages are very large, and make sure the animals have enough food and water in their cages. Also make sure they are away from drafts and sources of extreme temperatures. Cover cages with cloths if necessary to keep pets quiet and restful.
Fish
It is not practical to move fish in their aquarium. It is nearly impossible to move an aquarium safely, and each gallon of water weighs 8 pounds. It is best to give fish away to a good home, move the aquarium dry, and then purchase new fish when you get to your new home.
