Flower Mound Realtor advice for Moving Your House Plants
Flower Mound Realtor Sandy Luedke, owner Broker of Ideal Real Estate Group, has this advice for Moving Your House Plants.
Here are some tips on moving your plants without harming them:
- If you are moving to a different state, call your local US Department of Agriculture to check on regulations. Many states have restrictions on certain kinds of plants. These restrictions are usually to prevent the importation of pests or insects that can destroy the important cash crops of that state.
- A couple of weeks before you move prune plants to facilitate packing. If you’re not familiar with how best to prune, consult your florist or a plant book for instructions.
- A Week before you move, kill any possible pests or insects on your plants. Take a bug/pest strip, a pet’s flea collar, or bug powder, and put it in a black plastic bag. Then put your plants in the plastic bag, seal the bag, and place it in a cool area overnight.
- The day before you move, water plants if it’s summer; don’t water if it’s cold. Then place plants in cardboard boxes lined with dampened newspaper or packing paper, so they will be held in place. Fill empty spaces in boxes with crumpled paper to help cushion leaves and branches. Place a final layer of wet paper on top to keep plants moist. Then close boxes and punch air holes in the top.
- On the day of your move, set the boxes aside and write clearly on them “DO NOT LOAD” so that they won’t be taken on the moving van. Load them into your own car.
- When on the road, be careful where you park your car. Look for shady spots in the summer and sunny spots during the winter.
- Unpack the boxes as soon as you can after arriving. Remove plants through the bottom of the boxes, if possible, to avoid breaking stems. Do not expose plants to too much sunlight at first; let them get accustomed to light again gradually.
If you must leave some of your plants behind because of their size or lack of space, you can take cuttings. Consult a florist or plant book on the best way to take cuttings from different species. Then wrap cuttings with wet paper towels and place them in plastic bags.
