Business Social Media consultant gives tips on writing for Google.

Posted by imarketing in Internet Marketing, Uncategorized

Business Social Media advisor Lee Thurburn gives tips on writing BLOGs. Lets face it, you have two audiences and the most important one is Google.

No GOOGLE = No CLIENTS!

Of course everyone wants to have prospective clients see their wonderful content and wonderful content starts with a snappy title that captivates attention and causes the reader to click on the title and get more information. The problem with snappy titles is that in the attempt to create a really cool title people often forget that the main purpose of the title is to get Google to properly index the article so that someone searching for your type of business can find you based on the title.

What this means is that each title should focus on what I call a Specific Search Term (SST).  The SST is what someone searching for you or your product or your service would type into Google Search to find you. Remember, they do not know your name so they are searching for you on the basis of some sort of keyword string.  It is that keyword string that becomes your SST.

But the creation of a good title does not stop with a SST. It also must have an aspect that intrigues the reader enough that the reader (searcher) will want to click on your title to learn more about what you are offering.

Now comes the hard part. You must accomplish the goal of having a SST plus a catchy phrase all contained within 70 characters.  Google does not look past 70 characters in a title and it is highly likely that if you have more than 70 characters Google will actually penalize your article.  It is simply good, conservative, and time proven technique to limit the length of your title to 70 characters, including spaces and punctuation.

Remember that Google will give maximum consideration to your title when trying to identify the content of your article. If you try to stuff more than one SST into your title you run the risk of not having a ‘hook’ that will capture the attention of the Searcher.  The hook is designed to improve the probability that a prospective client will select your article from the list presented by Google when you do make it onto page 1 of Google.

Here are some examples of good titles with SSTs highlighted in BOLD text:

  1. Plano Fence Company offers tips to D-I-Y home owners.
  2. Frisco HVAC Company suggestions for lowering your energy costs.
  3. Irving Pest Control Service offers Bee removal services.

In the next article that I write I will explain how to reiterate and resonate the SST within the article body to improve the probability of Google including the article in Search Results Page (SeRP) when your SST is targeted.
