Since the late 1800’s, asphalt shingles have been used on roofs consistently. Initially they were made from felt that contained cotton or wool fibers. Cellulose fibers manufactured from recycled paper or wood began to be manufactured in the 1940’s. Since the late 70’s the basic material has been an inorganic fiberglass mat. Today they constitute over 80% of the current market. First the mat is coated with asphalt and then layered with a protective UV resistant coating with colored ceramic granules.
