I demand my rights! Evidence is solid that the better we get along with the folks at home (especially our mate), the more likely we are to be successful on the job. Unfortunately, there is also substantial proof that in far too many homes there is a signed truce at best and open warfare at worst. The following thoughts identify the problem and offer a solution.
Consider this scenario: The husband returns home late Friday afternoon, laden with luggage and a bulging briefcase for the week-end’s work. He kicks the door very forcefully and when his wife responds he says, “I’m late because I’ve been to a meeting where I learned that I have some rights I’ve not been getting. Now, the first thing we’re going to do is sit down and discuss my rights.”
His wife would undoubtedly respond, “That’s fine with me, Buster, because I, too, have some rights which I’ve been missing.” Question: What kind of week-end do you think they would have?
Same scenario: Friday afternoon, husband returns home heavily laden, gently taps on the door. His wife responds and he says, “Honey, I’m sorry I’m late but I’ve been to a meeting and learned that I’ve probably not been meeting all of your needs. I want us to sit down and discuss how I can meet your needs.” Chances are superb the wife will respond, “I’m so glad to hear you say that because I’ve probably not been meeting all of your needs. I would love to talk about those things!”
The picture is clear. Not only will this couple have a great weekend, they will also have an infinitely better chance of achieving the marital bliss they sought when they got married. It’s true that when we’re considerate of the needs of others, whether it’s our mate, employee, teacher, neighbor or relative, it creates a genuine win/win situation.
