GIS Conversion and Map Digitizing Services

GIS Conversion and Map Digitizing Services enable the preservation of historical maps, property maps, geologic maps and all other paper based map products.  GIS is defined as “a technology for managing geographical information.”   A GIS system consists of hardware programmed with suitable software (such as ArcInfo or AutoCAD Map) which allows users to manage and analyze space data and attributes (geographical information) following precise scientific formulas.

There are two main types of GIS: Vector GIS, which uses lines in order to delimit geographical objects and Raster GIS, which uses a regular reticulum to document geographical elements in space. Vectorization helps to create maps out of satellite or aerial images. In the field of graphics, this process assists in resizing without any change in the shape of the graphic.

Experienced mapping services experts can help with your tiff conversion, gis conversion, cad conversion and raster to vector map conversion, as well as map scanning and digitizing.  Companies such as CAD CAM Services, Inc., use advanced R2V technology to convert maps and other graphics from raster to vector formats, providing easy archiving and quick access.  CAD CAM understands the importance of accuracy in map conversions and we are proud to boast that we are able to achieve a consistent +/- .-5″ accuracy in our GIS conversions.

GIS conversion experts are also aware of the importance of accurate representation of contour lines, map attributes and layers.  CAD CAM follows “best practice” standards to ensure accurate, cost-effective map conversion work for all types of GIS projects, from cadastral and utility to the most sensitive defense agency maps and satellite imagery.   We use a combination of GIS products, including  AutoDesk, Bentley, ESRI, and Intergraph and we also employ our own Cad PerfectTM and Cad Perfect CAD conversionsTM tools to ensure the most accurate map conversions possible.  Our GIS conversions look like exact copies of the originals, and they are a high-precision job - first with different applications and then hours of hand redrawing by our experienced professionals.

Raster to Vector Conversion for Mechanical Engineering Drawings

Raster to Vector Conversion for Mechanical Engineering Drawings is a service offered by CAD CAM Services.

Wikipedia defines mechanical engineering as “an engineering discipline that applies the principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems.”  Mechanical engineers use engineering drawings to explore the principles and depict the systems they design.  Before the days of Computer Aided Design (CAD) draftsmen hand-drew mechanical engineering drawings.  Those original hand-drawn mechanical drawings are legacy drawings that trace a company’s engineering advances over the years.  Most firms want to preserve these legacy engineering drawings.

One simple way to preserve legacy  paper engineering drawings is by scanning them , then,  using a process called raster to vector conversion, the mechanical engineering drawings can be converted into o CAD files that can be accessed by whatever CAD system the engineering firm uses.

CAD / CAM Services, Inc.  provides outsource services for scanning and raster to vector conversion of mechanical engineering drawings.

R2V Raster to Vector Software Conversion saves Metal Mining Archives

Posted by raster-vector | Raster to Vector Conversion Services, Raster to Vector Conversion Software | Wednesday 24 March 2010 8:31 am

From Boom to Bust - Preserving Precious Metal Mining Archives saved by R2V Raster to Vector Conversion Software and Services.

From the California Gold Rush of 1849 through the energy boom of the 1970’s and the ensuing bust of the 1980s, booms and busts are part of the heritage of the mining industry.  The history of much of the American West has been marked by these boom and bust cycles, with towns and businesses developing nearly overnight and prospering, followed by high unemployment, businesses going under and mines shutting down.

During every boom cycle, the mining companies proliferate and prosper and as they do, they document locations of precious metals, they drill, sample and mine.  Then the bust comes, and the mining companies’ maps, documents and papers are packed away in boxes, often to be stored in someone’s basement and forgotten about.  When the next boom comes, geologists, prospectors and mining engineers strive to find the old documents and make sense of the data stored in their pages.

Golden Predator Royalty & Development Corporation  and Uranium One have undertaken a joint project  to find and digitize old maps and other documents from the mid 1800’s through the mid 1980s and put them into an archive to facilitate the exploration of uranium, titanium, gold and other minerals.

“One of the big challenges of this project is scanning the old maps, “says Tim Szekely,  of Uranium One.  “Needless to say, when a mining company goes bust and the maps have been stored in a basement, sometimes for 100 years or more, they’re not in very good shape.  Some maps that are on thermal paper have badly faded images; other maps have gotten damp and are water-marked and wrinkled.  Some are very fragile, with the edges fraying away as they’re handled. We needed to find scanners that would handle these old documents and provide accurate digital files. ”

Uranium One choose Contex large format scanners for the maps and Bell & Howell Truper scanners for the smaller documents, both provided by CAD / CAM Services.  The Contex scanners were chosen because of their image quality, speed, ease of use and cost.  Some of the more fragile documents are encased in plastic sleeves for protection during the scanning process.  The Bell & Howell Trupers were chosen for their high throughput and the option to go to flatbed scanning mode when needed.

To date, more than fifty thousand maps, plus hundreds of thousands of office documents and correspondence have been scanned.  Some of the documents include data that is of historical significance rather than exploration significance, such as documents from the Manhattan project, old telegrams, and old, hand-drawn maps, many from local old mines. There are also some hand drawn maps from around the world.

The scanned maps and documents are saved to PDF files and entered into the database.  Uranium One uses the maps to find uranium and they make the database available to others who are looking for other minerals such as gold and titanium.  These old maps tell explorers where to look and where not to look for minerals.  The companies save money because they don’t have to drill holes to record background radiation to know what minerals are underground.

Additionally, when sites have previously been explored, today’s mining companies don’t have to duplicate efforts to learn that there’s nothing there or that the minerals are depleted.  In some cases, the old maps point to sites where minerals were previously discovered, but not worked because it would have been too expensive to get to the minerals.  However, it may be viable to work these old sites today with newer technology.

Scott Shuppert of CAD / CAM services says “One of the best things about my job is being able to provide Contex and Bell and Howell scanning equipment that not only helps companies become more efficient, but that also helps them preserve our history like Golden Predator and Uranium One are doing.”

Golden Predator is an industry leader in the drilling, sampling and mining of high grade ores and has access to extensive world-wide precious metals data and maps.   Golden Predator maintains the maps and data in an extensive database that is used to focus efforts on promising exploration projects.

Uranium One Inc. is a uranium producing company that focuses on delivering results and strives for continuous improvement in uranium mining.  Uranium One was quick to see the value of an electronic database archive that consolidates mining information that is available on old documents, much of which has been maintained in private files.   is undertaking the digitizing of the old maps and documents to be included in the database that Golden Predator maintains.

Raster to Vector Conversion Software helps convert paper to CAD

Posted by raster-vector | Raster to Vector Conversion Software | Monday 22 February 2010 9:22 pm

CAD CAM Services discusses how Raster to Vector Conversion Software can help Bring Paper Drawings into Your CAD System.

Many companies have flat files full of old paper drawings.  The information on the drawings is important, but unusable in its paper form with a CAD (Computer Aided Design) system. Since most designing today is done in a CAD System, it is advantageous for companies to convert their paper drawings to CAD drawings, so that the designs can be re-used, updated and permanently stored.

One way to convert the drawings is to re-draw them in the CAD system.  This is a labor-intensive process that makes poor use of a draftsman’s or a designer’s time.

A more efficient and cost-effective method is to scan the drawings and convert them via a process called raster to vector conversion.  This paper to CAD process can be accomplished in one of two ways:  (1) purchase a scanner and raster to vector conversion software and do it yourself; or; (2) hire a scanning and conversion service bureau to do the work for you.

Generally speaking, unless you already have scanning and conversion experts on your payroll, the best solution is to hire an experienced scanning and conversion service provider to do the work for you.
There are several reasons for relying on an expert to do the scanning and conversion work for you:  (1) economies of scale and time—they’re already set up for speed, accuracy and production scanning; (2) the conversion process (going from a scanned raster drawing to a CAD vector drawing) is not always as easy as conversion software manufacturers would have you believe.   It is not uncommon with 100 drawings, that 30% are converted via one (1) method, the next 40% need to converted via a different method, and the remaining are hand redrawn.   A professional service bureau can quickly and easily assess what needs to be done and do it, while you would still be trying to figure it out.

As with any service you are going to procure, make sure the scanning and conversion bureau has proven and verifiable capability to provide converted files that can be brought into your AutoCAD ,  Microstation, or other CAD program that you use.   Make sure that the conversion service you choose is able to provide vector files that are easily editable in your PC CAD, CNC, GIS or other program.

Finally, confirm that the raster to vector conversion service that you use provides quality control and a satisfaction guarantee.    The work should be guaranteed to be 100% correct, 100% of the time.  No exceptions.  No excuses.

What is Raster to Vector Conversion and how does it work?

Posted by raster-vector | Cad outsourcing, Raster to Vector Converter | Tuesday 9 February 2010 10:51 pm

CAD CAM Services answers the question… What is raster to vector conversion?

Raster to Vector (or R2V) is used extensively in commercial and industrial applications to convert technical drawings, maps and other paper graphics from scanned raster files to vector formats.

    Scanning

The process starts with a high quality scan. When a paper drawing is scanned, the resulting digital file is a raster file.   The large format scanner used to scan paper drawings for raster to vector conversion should be a scanner that is capable of providing a high quality image.   Image quality is everything here.   If two lines are muddied and appear as a single line in the scanned drawing it will be difficult, if not impossible, to know that they should be separated when the scanned raster image is converted to a vector image.  Once you have the best scanned raster image possible, rectify the image to make sure it is aligned correctly, scaled correctly, and that it measures correctly on all axes points.Converting

In order to work with a digital file in a CAD (Computer Aided Design) system, the scanned raster file needs to be converted to a vector file by a process called raster to vector conversion or, simply, vectorization.    According to Wikipedia, “vectorization refers to the process of converting raster graphics into vector graphics.”    In very simple terms, this means converting pixels, which are dots of color (raster) like this  . . . . . . . . . . . into lines (vectors) like this __________.    It’s important to note that when you enlarge a raster image, the dots or pixels begin to break apart, like this .   .   .   .   .   .   .   .   .   .   and you lose the clarity of the image.  (Think about enlarging a photo taken with your digital camera.) On the other hand, a vector image can be enlarged indefinitely without loss of integrity, like this________________________ because it is made of lines, arcs, polygons, etc.

How exactly do you convert from raster to vector?

There are many different conversion methods. There are commercially available raster to vector conversion software packages from companies like GTX, Hitachi, I/Vector, and Softelec.   Some conversion service companies have written their own raster to vector conversion routines.  Unfortunately we have found that one raster to vector conversion product does not fit all. It is not uncommon with 100 drawings, that 30% are converted via one (1) method, the next 40% need to converted via a different method, and the remaining are hand redrawn.

Please do not be misled with raster to vector software vendors promising ‘automatic raster to vector conversion’.   Simply put, it is not true.  These products are tools - and only tools.  They all can help in the conversion process, but they are not the cure-alls they claim to be.

Generally, we have found that the most reliable way to get “CAD Perfect” digital drawings is by using an experienced raster to vector conversion service.  Make sure the firm has proven and verifiable capability to provide converted files that can be brought into your AutoCAD ,  Microstation, or other CAD program that you use.

No excuses.

Raster to Vector Conversion Delivers Tinker USAF Base Project On Time

Posted by raster-vector | Cad outsourcing, Raster to Vector Conversion Services | Monday 8 February 2010 11:27 pm

Raster to Vector Conversion Outsourcing Speeds Delivery Time in Urgent Situations for Tinker Air Force Base Modernized Engineering Data Repository Project.

    Background

The Engineering Data Branch at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, operates and manages a United States Air Force-designated Category V Engineering Data Support Center (EDSC) that provides an official Department of Defense repository for weapon systems engineering data/drawings.  Digital data is stored in the Joint Engineering Data Management Information and Control System (JEDMICS).  Branch employs approximately 35 personnel for acquisition, management, storage and distribution of engineering drawings.

    Problem

The time required for the engineering data repository to provide a needed stable-based engineering data drawing (known as Mylars) to a customer could be as much as 7 – 15 days.  In urgent situations, this created unacceptable delays in customer processes required for essential maintenance of affected weapon systems.

In today’s military and business environment, success depends upon the quality and accessibility of information and the speed in which the information can be disseminated.  In order to facilitate speed of information dissemination, the Department of Defense (DoD) and USAF policy and directions regarding engineering data include a move toward a completely digital environment.

Consistent with previous initiatives to digitize legacy drawings and aperture cards, the OC-ALC EDSC needed to also digitize undimensioned drawings on stable-based material (Mylars) to preserve and fully utilize the government’s investment.  The overall goal was to fully integrate legacy Mylars into the automated work environment through digitization and subsequent storage in the JEDMICS.

    Possible Solutions

The Engineering Data Branch at Tinker Air Force Base researched several possible solutions for digitizing and integrating the legacy Mylars into the automated work environment.  Solutions that were considered included purchasing equipment for in-house digitization; contracting with a drawing conversion service; or, doing nothing and maintaining the status quo.

Various types of equipment and equipment scenarios were considered as part of an in-house solution.  It was determined that this option would be a high risk option because purchasing the equipment capable of providing the required digitizing accuracy would be expensive and costly to maintain.

Maintenance of the status quo, i.e., doing nothing was also considered a high-risk option because of the potential for loss due to damage, destruction and fading of the existing Mylars.

It was determined that contracting with a drawing conversion service provided the least risk and most benefit.  CAD / CAM Services Inc., was one of the sources discovered during the Engineering Data Branch’s original market research that was capable of converting undimensioned engineering drawings to digital format with very precise accuracy.  However, the requirement was provided to the Tinker Air Force Base Contracting Office, and their processes included solicitation from many vendors.  After evaluating vendor responses, Tinker Air Force Base selected CAD / CAM Services based upon their technical proposal and cost providing the best value to the government.

Why CAD / CAM Services Won

The Tinker Air Force project required a tolerance of +/-.005” accuracy over any five- or ten-inch area for the digital scanned files.   The drawings are on Mylar, which is a plastic sheeting material that may be affected over the years by changes in temperature.  This means that the older drawings may have stretched or otherwise changed in size, affecting the accuracy of the drawing itself.

Frank Maschino, Engineering Data Manager, at Tinker Air Force Base says, “The accuracy of the final digital file is of paramount importance to us.  These digital files are stored in Tinker Air Force Base’s electronic repository as a permanent archive for all of our drawings.   If we need to refer to these digital drawings, or print out a new paper drawing, it is essential that the measurements be as accurate as, if not better than the original Mylar drawing when it was new.”

CAD / CAM Services has a proprietary method that electronically compensates for error within each five- or ten-inches to restore original drawing accuracy.  This is a Boeing and Lockheed certifiable tolerance for aircraft drawings.

“The scanning accuracy requirement called for in the bid far exceeds the accuracy that is available from any conventional scanning system,” says Scott Shuppert, President of CAD / CAM Services.  “We are one of only a few firms world-wide who is able to generate calibrated digital files of this accuracy.   Our approach is unique and it enables us to specialize in tough jobs like this. “

CAD / CAM Services beat out the competition with their unique process, which is extremely accurate.  Unlike photography, electronic images are NOT dependent upon room conditions such as humidity, the scan or scanning issues, the quality of the original, or other external circumstances.   CAD / CAM’s process is the only method that can allow this type of accuracy, with the electronic image becoming even better than the original.   CAD / CAM’s method is  also significantly less than half the cost of methods previously used.

CAD / CAM Services also helped the Tinker Air Force Base Engineering Data Branch locate precision plotters that can plot new, hard-copy drawings on stable-based material from the new digital images when required.  This will enable the branch to provide a customer response time of about two hours instead of the previous 7 – 15 days to purchase a reproduced copy of an undimensioned drawing on stable-based material.

Tinker Air Force Base is nearing completion of a project that will provide official certification of their digital Mylars and local-plotting process.  This will allow them to elevate and share their entire process, including CAD CAM as a source for digitizing Mylars.  It is expected that the review will be positive.

Raster to Vector Conversion Software Keeps Coal Miners Safe

Posted by raster-vector | Raster to Vector Conversion Services, Raster to Vector Converter | Saturday 9 January 2010 12:33 pm

CAD CAM Services provides Raster to Vector Conversion Software that helps to keep Coal Miners safe.

CAD Perfect Conversion of Coal Mine Maps for Kelley Surveying

In West Virginia, Pennsylvania and other states, geologists are mapping coal beds in order to provide mining companies with accurate information relative to the mining work in which they are engaged.   A major part of these mapping projects includes accurate mapping of old mines that may be located under or close to an active mine site.  Knowing exactly where these old mines are located is important to miner safety.  Old mines can be full of gas and water.  It can be disastrous for an active mining project to inadvertently tap into one of these old mines.  The new mine can rapidly become full of noxious gas or rapidly flooded with water causing injuries and loss of life.

One West Virginia firm who is helping with this project is Kelly Surveying.  Kenneth Kelly and his employees work hard to provide miners with accurate survey information for their mining projects.  One of the more complex processes requires Kelly Surveying to bring information from old paper mining maps into their modern AutoCAD system.   Many of these maps are torn, stained, discolored and hard to read.  They have to be accurately scanned, cleaned up, and then converted from scanned raster drawings into vector drawings that can be manipulated in AutoCAD.

This is where CAD/CAM Services comes in.  CAD/CAM has a proprietary process that enables them to create a “CAD Perfect TM” conversion quickly and inexpensively.  With +/- .005” accuracy, the reproduced maps look like exact copies of the originals, only clean, legible and easier to read.  According to Kenneth Kelly, the product that he gets back from CAD/CAM is so perfect that he and his staff are able to reproduce the maps, use the reproductions in the field, locate common surface features such as gas wells, ventilation shafts or other common points and reference into their Geographic Information System (GIS).  In addition, Kenneth says that the turnaround time from CAD/CAM is very fast.

“Prior to finding CAD/CAM Services and their CAD Perfect TM conversion services, it would require many hours for our draftsmen to digitize the maps.  There are hatch marks and contour lines on mine maps that make the digitizing process very labor intense,” says Kenneth Kelly.  “With CAD/CAM, our costs are lower, the conversion is done much more quickly and the accuracy is amazing.  We’re very satisfied.”
