Carrollton Pest Control Service owner Blake Williams of Service 1st Pest and Lawn offers tips to control the weeds that come with summer and invade your yard.
Now that summer is here, the tough summer grassy weeds will start to grow. Here are some tips on controlling them.
Weed Control
In the summer time we move our focus from winter and spring annual broadleaf weeds to summer grassy weeds. In Texas that means Crabgrass and Dallis grass. These two summer grassy weeds are very difficult to manage. Use Google to identify which one you are dealing with.
- It is a good Idea to make an additional pre emergent application on the lawn between May 1st and May 15th. This may prevent some Dallis grass and Crabgrass seeds from germinating and reduce the amount of spurge seeds that germinate.
- Post emergent control of Crabgrass and Dallis grass can be achieved in Bermuda grass with products containing MSMA. This should be mixed and applied according to the label. This will include applications every 7 to 10 days until control is achieved. Remember that the MSMA will injure your Bermuda grass and it will turn yellow for a few days after applications are made. It is recommended that spot applications be made instead of broadcast applications. This will keep the effects of the MSMA on the Bermuda to a minimum. If the infestation is widespread, broadcast applications may be necessary.
- Control of Crabgrass can usually be achieved with 1 or 2 applications. Dallis grass will require at least 2 applications and sometimes requires 3 or 4 applications.
- MSMA cannot be used on St. Augustine Grass. The St. Augustine Grass will not recover from the injury. Atrazine applied in the late spring to St. Augustine grass can help control Crabgrass. There is no herbicide that will control Dallis grass in St. Augustine Grass. The only alternative is to dig up the Dallis grass or use Round Up and then re sod the dead areas. Round Up is a non selective herbicide containing Glyphosate that will kill all it is applied to.
- If you have problems with Spurge, which is a summer broadleaf annual weed, it can be easily controlled with applications of products containing 2,4-D.
Carrollton Pest Control Service owner Blake Williams says the best weed control is healthy turf grass which requires the right amounts of sunlight, water, fertilizer and frequent mowing. Call us at Service 1st Pest and Lawn for help with your lawn care or pest control needs, 940-594-8154.
