Carrollton Pest Control Company talks about lawn overseeding
Carrollton Pest Control Service owner Blake Williams of Service 1st Pest and Lawn offers advice on “Do It Yourself Lawn Overseeding”
Many homeowners in the North Texas area overseed their Bermuda Grass Lawns with Winter Rye grass. This gives the lawn a lush green look through the winter that is eye catching. The recommendation is often made by the home owner’s lawn service company. Of course having actively growing grass through the winter keeps them busy and helps boost their revenues through the slow winter months.
I usually do not recommend overseeding for two reasons: First, the Rye grass takes nutrients out of the soil that would normally be stored up for use by the Bermuda grass in the spring and summer. Second, the Rye grass and Bermuda grass will compete for sunlight and nutrients in the late spring and neither will be healthy during that period leaving a less than desirable looking lawn during the transition period when the Rye grass is dying and the Bermuda grass is coming out of dormancy.
In summary, you will have a healthier Bermuda grass lawn that will green up earlier in the Spring if you do not overseed with winter Rye grass.
