Carrollton Pest Control Company talks about “Fall Pre Emergence Herbicide for Your Lawn”
Carrollton Pest Control Service owner Blake Williams of Service 1st Pest and Lawn offers advice on “Fall Pre Emergence Herbicide for Your Lawn”.
If you are not overseeding your lawn, which I recommended you don’t, It is about time to apply Fall Pre Emergence Herbicide. Fall Pre Emergence Herbicide is applied at this time of year to help control Winter Annual Weeds. In North Texas that means Henbit, Annual Blue Grass, Dandelions, and Rescue Grass.
Most professional lawn care companies will use a liquid pre emergence herbicide which works best because you get more complete coverage over the area to be treated. If you plan to do it yourself, granular products are recommended because they do not require special spray equipment and there is less opportunity for over applications.
Pre emergence herbicide is actually a soil sterilant. It sterilizes the top layer of soil which prevents seeds from germinating. If pre emergence herbicide is applied prior to overseeding you will get poor results because the seeds will not germinate. The sterilization lasts about 6 weeks.
Remember to water in the pre emergence herbicide after it is applied to get the herbicide into the top layer of soil. If you combine a post emergence herbicide with the application then wait 24 hours before watering to allow any existing weeds to absorb the herbicide.
