Rover ants have become a huge problem for home owners and Professional Exterminators in the Dallas Fortworth Metroplex.   We do not know much about this species. Colonies nest in soil and leaf litter, often under covering objects such as stones. I have also suspected them nesting under the foundation and/or porches and sidewalks. These ants feed on a variety of sweet and greasy food sources and they reproduce at an extremely high rate.  They first started showing up in this area about 6 years ago and you can find them foraging on or near just about every house in the metroplex.   

Home owners complain when they find these ants foraging on kitchen and bathroom counter tops, in pantries and some have even found them in children’s beds.  Repeated applications of pesticides have failed to eliminate the ant colonies and the ants do not respond to the usual commercially manufactured ant bait products.  They have not been known to bite but are extremely annoying.

The best ant control product on the market today is Termidor and results using this product have also been less than stellar. Dr. Ray Thompson a PHD entomologist in the area reported success controlling these ants with home made baits made with boric acid and canned cat food. 

When using insecticides inspection is the key.  All areas around the house should be inspected including trees and shrubs, under rocks and pavestones, fences and around the foundation.  Insecticides should be applied to all areas where ants are observed as well as the entire perimeter of the house.  In addition, it may be a good idea to foam or dust plumbing voids or other wall voids where ants are entering the house.  These ants are very persistent and controlling them takes persistence.  This is best left up to a professional.  Homeowners should be patient as it may take several weeks to obtain control.
