Frisco Fence Repair Company owner Sean Eubanks, President of Texas State Fence Company, talks about the fencing industry.
We live in a part of the United States that is blessed with fair weather most of the year. True it gets a little hot during July and August but that is balanced most years by winters that are mild enough to get outside and enjoy your yard, and golfing and other out door activities, most of the winter.
Our Spring season can be a little windy and we do get the occasionally wind storm. Hail storms are also not uncommon, but, we are fortunate not to have too many tornado’s in the North Texas area. That is a threat that our neighbors to the north suffer more than we do.
The extremes of heat and cold do have a very negative effect on fences, especially those made of wood. The damage that is done can be attributed to water and wind along with temperature extremes. Water that infiltrated the wood can weaken the wood due to rot, and in the winter months water penetrating the fibers of the wood, then freezing, can quickly damage fence materials. in the summer the extreme heat can dry the wood and cause it to become more of a sponge when rains do come. A fence that has been weakened by heat and cold becomes more vulnerable to wind pressures. High winds in the Spring can cause weakened fences to break when that same fence, in good condition, would withstand the wind forces.
The single best way to protect your fence investment is to maintain the water seal on the wood through the consistent application of sealers and stains through out the years. I recommend that you have your fence inspected each year and that most fences in the North Texas area could benefit from having a fresh coat of stain or sealer applied no less than once evey two years. It is a lot less expensive to maintain your fence than it is to repair or replace it. The cost of maintaining your fence is very low and has the added benefit of making it look great all the time.
Give us a call and we will be happy to come by and assess the current condition of your fence and let you know if it would be a good time to maintain your fence with a fresh coat of stain or sealant.
