Frisco Fence Company advice for dealing with slopes on fence lines.

Frisco Fence Company owner Sean Eubanks, President of Texas State Fence Co., offers advice on how to deal with slopes when building a fence.

Creating an elevation drawing prior to building your fence forces you to confront the fact that you fence line may traverse a slope. Fence lines are often forced to traverse terrain that has some degree of slope and dealing that the slope correctly can impact the quality, beauty, and strength of your fence for many years to come.

There are three basic construction choices that you have for dealing with slopes when building a fence. Those choices are:

  1. Stepped Framing
  2. Sloped (Parallel) Framing
  3. Hybrid Framing
  • Stepped Framing

With stepped framing the fence is built in sections with each section resting level at a different elevation. On gradual slopes this looks good but on more steeply graded slopes the look begins to become less desirable.  Basically each section is built such that that panel is level at the top but the bottoms of the slats are cut to mirror the ground surface.

  • Sloped (Parallel) Framing

With sloped (parallel) framing the fence is sloped to the same angle that the ground is sloped, mirroring the gradient of the ground slope.  This is usually the best approach with steep slopes or rolling terrain.

  • Hybrid Framing

On very steep slopes you can intermix the stepped and sloped framing methods and set your posts as though stepped but construct your panels to a slope gradient that mirrors the terrain.

Frisco Fence Company discusses fence design elemental basics.

Frisco Fence Company owner Sean Eubanks, President of Texas State Fence Co., discusses fence design elemental basics.

Custom Designed Fence

Custom Designed Fence

The design of your fence actually says quite a bit about your personality and your station in life.  For a variety of reasons most people succumb to relatively basic fence designs, primarily due to the lower cost of going with a mass market sort of fence. Lets face it, assembling fences from pre-made panels is much faster and lower cost than building a truly custom fence.  For most people cost is the single major consideration in fence design and selection.

For some people cost is not the primary concern and for those people there is a whole world of design options to choose from.  One of the basic decisions that must be made about your fence is ‘What Purpose Does the Fence Fulfill’? Do you want your fence to truly separate your property from the surrounding environment and provide protection and or privacy, or do you want your fence to provide a visual accent to the property and enhance the aesthetics of your property while establishing evidence of ownership?

Next you must decide on some basic stylistic elements such as do you want to use local materials or are you interested in bringing unique materials in from other regions? Both of the these questions have a major impact on the cost of the fence, of course.

Design of a fence is almost always a study in compromise.  Competing one against the other are purpose, vision, style, skills, budget, and time. Careful consideration of each of these elements will be needed if you are embarking on the creation of a truly custom fence.  These are exactly the types of questions that Sean Eubanks and his team deal with on a daily basis.

Frisco Fence Company uses Cedar Fences to Raise Property Values

Frisco Fence Company owner Sean Eubanks, President of Texas State Fence Co. installs fences and improves property values for home owners in Frisco Texas.

Cedar Fences Increase Property Values

Cedar Fences Increase Property Values

The times are changing and fences are becoming increasingly popular. In the 1950s and 1960s it was common for homes in subdivisions to not have any fencing in the back yards that would separate homes from each other. During the last 20 years the number of homes with back yard fences has grown to over 90 percent in communities such as Frisco.

For Frisco fence company clients, and clients in other North Texas communities, the most popular styles of fence are the board-on-board and stockade styles with cedar wood or cedar stain. Most fences being installed have steel posts due to the greater stamina that steel posts exhibit when combating termites and strong winds. While steel posts are a popular option many clients do opt for the more traditional wood post fences. Additional popular options include extended heights such as 8 foot tall and 10 foot tall privacy fences.

Other fencing options that many clients desire are specialty privacy fences to screen pool areas, dog runs, security fence enhancements, and of course the every popular automated gates. Automate gates come in both track roller and swing styles. Drive options include chain drives, gear drives, and screw drives.

Buyers want fences on their homes. More importantly, buyers want quality fences that are in good condition and that will withstand the strong winds that we get in Frisco in the Spring and Fall. Good quality fences help to sell homes more quickly and are a valuable asset to have when you are considering selling your home. A good fence can make the difference between a quick sale and a sale that takes longer.

Allen Fence Company installs pool barrier saftey fences in homes.

Allen Fence Company owner Sean Eubanks of Texas State Fence Co. recommends all homes with a swimming pool install perimeter fencing.

Accidental drowning was the third leading cause of death for young children between in the United States during 1997.  Studies have repeatedly shown that almost half of all swimming pool drownings occur in the child’s home pool. Pool Perimeter fencing not only makes sound sense but most states and or cities have legislation that require homes with pools install perimeter fences to protect children from accidental drowning.

Pool Barrier Safety Fence

Pool Barrier Safety Fence

Brain damage can occur as quickly as within four to six minutes and survival without impairment is unusual if submersion occurs for greater than five minutes. Property line fencing is not sufficient to protect children from drowning as it is not intended to prevent children in the neighborhood from gaining access to the pool area in the back yard. Barrier fencing at or near the pool’s edge is preferred, and often required by law, to prevent accidental submersion from children that are in the back yard. It only takes a couple of seconds for a child to slip out of sight in into the pool.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has published standards for pool barrier fencing that serves as a foundation for most State and City fence codes.  These standards and other pool safety recommendations are available online at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/chdrown.html.  One study estimated that a four-sided barrier fence would reduce drowning events for children under 13 years old by as much as 75 percent as compared to homes with no fencing or only partial fencing.

Frisco Fence Repair Company owner Sean Eubanks, President of Texas State Fence Co., helps improve property values by installing and maintaining fences.

In the last 50 years fences have become increasingly popular. During the 50s and 60s it was normal for homes in subdivisions not to have any fences separating their back yards from each other. Especially over the last 20 years the percentage of homes with fenced back yard has increased to over 90 percent in communities such as Frisco.

For clients of Texas State Fence Company the most popular styles of fence has become the board-on-board and stockade styles constructed with cedar wood or with pine that has a cedar stain applied. Most new fences that are installed are installed with steel posts because of the greater strength that steel posts exhibit when combating strong winds.  Of course steel posts are impervious to permits which is an added benefit.  While steel posts are a popular option many clients do prefer the more traditional wood post fences. Some additional popular options include extended heights.  Many people are choosing fences that are as much as 8 foot tall up to 10 foot tall for additional privacy.

Some other fencing options that some clients select are privacy fences specifically designed to screen pool areas, dog runs, security perimeter fences, and of course the extremely popular automated gates. Automated gates come in two primary mechanical types. Texas State Fence Company installs both track roller and swing styles. Drive options that are available include chain drives, gear drives, and screw drives.

Most contemporary Buyers desire fences on their homes. Plano Fence Repair Company owner Sean Eubanks, President of Texas State Fence Co., recommends that you replace damaged wood posts with steel.

  • It is a simple fact that steel posts are stronger than wood posts. Properly installed steel posts can withstand significantly greater wind stress loads that wood posts. Steel posts have the added benefit of not being susceptible to wood destroying insects. Steel posts also resist water damage if the steel is either stainless or galvanized. Simply put, if you are planning on living in your home for the long term you will want to lower the maintenance costs and reduce the probability of wind damage.

Plano Fence Company offers advice on Automatic Gate Installation

Plano Fence Company owner Sean Eubanks, President of Texas State Fence Co., offers some practical considerations for installing an automatic gate on your drive.

There are several things that you should consider when selecting and installing an automatic gate opener:

1) Power Source

Most Automatic Gate Openers are powered by 12 volt DC power sources. 12 Volt DC Power is what your car battery uses an you can use many components from the automotive parts supply house if you wish. The battery will need to be charged either on a continual basis or periodically.  Since it is not typically practical to remove the battery and charge it there are a variety of recharging systems that are available. The most common is to run a 110 Volt AC power from the home to the Controller unit and install a AC to DC Converter that will recharge the battery on a continual basis. Another good option, though more expensive, is to use a solar panel to provide a continual source of DC current to the Battery. In either case you will need a regulator to maintain the proper charge rate and to turn off the recharging current when the batter has reached peak charge.

Manufacturers of gate openers supply battery charging regulators but you can also pick them up at hardware stores or similar facilities. Be sure to that you use a device that is called a ‘maintainer’ to make sure that the charger turns off when the battery reaches maximum charge as to continue charging will damage the battery.

2) Gate Opener Controller

Be sure to consider how you are going to activate the gate opening and closing process when you install the gate opener.

Several options are available. One is a simple remote control that you can keep in your car similar to a garage door opener. You can get multiple units and distribute to everyone who has a car so that they do not need to get out to manually activate the gate.

When guests arrive you will have to consider how they gain access. Intercom systems can be installed but they can be quite expensive. A variety of system are available but you may not even need an intercom system with the prevalence of cell phones today most people will have a cell phone and they can call you to let you know they are at the gate. If you want to install an intercom system you may consider a Dorbell Fon System. The Dorbell Fon System allows people to press a key on the call box that will ring your designated phone with a special ring. When you answer the phone you can communicate with the guest and when ready hit the star key to open the gate.
