Frisco AC Repair Service offers advice on warranties for your AC system.
Frisco AC Repair Service owner Steve Lauten, President of Total Air and Heat, offers some thoughts on warranties for your new AC system.
Warranties: Bang for your Buck?
Everyone always cringes when the dreaded question is asked: are you interested in an extended warranty? Sometimes a warranty seems like a curse. You spend the extra money and nothing ever happens where you end up needing to use it. But then, you don’t get one and something does happen and you end up really regretting not spending the cash on the warranty. Air conditioning and heating systems are a huge investment and unfortunately, I can’t tell you whether or not an extended warranty is right for you. However, I can give you some information to hopefully make your decision a little easier.
Trane Comfort Specialists
Total Air & Heat Co. is a Comfort Specialist and dealer for Trane products. The first tip I can give you when interested in a Trane product is to use a Trane Comfort Specialist dealer. According to Trane, Comfort Specialists are dealers of the highest standing and are also committed to being the best in every aspect from installation, service, customer satisfaction and employee training.
Not every Trane dealer qualifies, but only those that meet Trane’s stringent standards and demonstrate dedication to customer satisfaction, and a commitment to continuing education. Comfort Specialists keep up to date with Trane’s latest technology guaranteeing that your system is designed to achieve maximum efficiency, reliability, and comfort.
Trane Limited Warranties
Every Trane system comes with a 1 year part warranty. Trane Dealers also include a 1 year labor warranty on any Trane part except for XL systems, and a 2 year warranty on any Trane XL system part. So if you have a Trane system installed by a Trane Dealer, all parts and labor are under warranty for 1 year for any non-XL system/part, and for 2 years for any XL system/part. It is important to keep in mind that refrigerant is not included in any Trane Limited Warranty.
Trane Extended Warranties
Extended Warranties, while ranging in price, definitely have their advantages. Trane offers 5 and 10 year warranties on any Trane systems and parts installed. Trane Extended Warranties include both the price of parts and labor. Refrigerant is also included in all Extended Warranties. A benefit of a Trane Extended Warranty is the built in product replacement advantage. This means that if any part fails within the time of your extended warranty, the price of the part and the labor can go towards a new Trane system if you would want to purchase a new system rather than replace the part. Trane Extended Warranties are also fully transferable to a new owner if a property is sold.
It’s Not Too Late
If you have bought a Trane system within the past 5 years, it is not too late to purchase a Trane Extended Warranty. A Trane dealer will have to inspect the system to evaluate it’s condition, especially if preventative maintenance has not been performed. It is also important to keep in mind that the Trane Extended Warranty does not begin when the warranty is purchased but actually when the system or part was installed.
Warranty or No Warranty
Whether you decided to purchase a Trane Extended Warranty or not, remember that a warranty does not take the place of preventative maintenance. Just like a car may have a warranty, it still needs it’s oil changed. Preventative maintenance is vital for any air conditioning or heating system to perform properly. Regardless of if you decided to get an extended warranty, the performance and longevity of your system will be exceptionally greater with preventative maintenance performed on both your air conditioner and heater each year.

Plano AC Repair Service discusses importance of regular tune ups.
Plano AC Repair Service owner Steve Lauten, President of Total Air and Heat, discusses importance of regular tune ups.
Tuning In to Tune Ups
You hear a lot about tune-ups. Mostly, it’s about the tune-ups on your car, and there is even the annual tune-up on yourself at the doctor’s office. What are typically forgotten about are the tune-ups on your air conditioning and heating systems. Air conditioning and heating tune-ups can commonly be forgotten, or seen as a waste of money. If it’s cooling fine, then why bother? An unknown but impressive fact is that in 1 year, your air conditioning and heating system runs enough hours to equal a car that travels 60,000 miles. That would take a serious toll on your car to use it that much yet not get tune uyps or oil changes performed on it. There are important benefits for doing tune-ups, and also costly, inconvenient consequences for ignoring them.
What are Tune-Ups?
Tune-Ups are preventative maintenance performed on your air conditioning and heating systems. Service technicians typically perform a cooling tune up on your air conditioner(s) during the spring or summer months along with a heating tune up on your heater(s) during the fall or winter months. For maximum performance of your systems, tune-ups are vital. Being in business since 1957, Total Air & Heat Co. has found that well maintained systems rarely breakdown. In fact, 90% of all failures are directly related to the lack of regular maintenance.
What to make sure is included in Tune-Ups
While each company may do them differently, there are important things to make sure are included in your air conditioning or heating tune-ups. Keep an eye on special offers, because sometimes companies leave out certain parts of a tune-up in these deals.
Typically, a tune-up includes:
- measuring the system’s refrigerant charge
- monitoring starting capabilities
- measuring the volts/AMPs on compressor and motors
- cleaning the condenser coil
- cleaning the outside unit
- lubricating the fan motor where accessible
- inspecting the thermostat operation
- changing the owner supplied air filters
- taking temperature readings across the evaporator coil
- inspecting and tightening blower components
- inspecting and blowing out the condensate drain life if needed
- inspecting and cleaning furnace heat exchanger and burners
- inspecting safety controls
- inspecting pilot and main flame
- inspecting flue pipe
- inspecting evaporator coil and drain pan
- inspecting heat pump defrost controls and operation
The Consequences of not performing Tune-Ups
If maintenance is neglected, then you spend more money on utility cost, more money on major repairs, and your equipment may break down when you need it the most. When maintenance is neglected it will void your warranty. Neglecting maintenance may put your family’s safety at risk.
ESA’s
Total Air & Heat Co. offers an ESA, or Energy Savings Agreement that can save you money on yearly tune-ups. By purchasing this contract, technicians will come to your house twice a year to perform tune-ups on your air conditioning and heating systems. With the contract, the regular tune-up rate is reduced. You will also receive a 15% off discount on any repairs needed on your system while under the year contract. This discount also includes Freon. Also, if you ever happen to need emergency service not within business hours, the after hours fee is reduced if you have an ESA with Total Air & Heat Co.!
What to Remember:
90% of failures in air conditioning and heating systems are directly related to the lack of regular maintenance. Ignoring tune-ups can cause serious consequences to your systems along with expensive repairs. A tune up pays for itself in reduced operating costs. Lastly, it is easy to save 50 cents a day off of your utility bill while extending the life of your system at the same time. There are many significant benefits to tune-ups and even more to signing up for Energy Saving Agreements!

Richardson AC Repair Service spreads information about allergens.
Richardson AC Repair Service owner Steve Lauten, President of Total Air and Heat, spreads information about allergens.
How Some Foods Improve Allergy Symptoms You’ve heard about food allergies, of course. Wheat, egg, milk and peanuts are among the substances that can send quite a few folks into reactions that are quite hard to swallow. But did you also know that some foods can actually help with allergies of the airborne type?
When airborne particles are causing a runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes and more, try taking a bite out of your breathing trouble with strategic dietary selections.
For example:
- Omega-3 fatty acids have “anti-inflammatory” properties. Look for these in cold-water fish (wild salmon, mackerel, trout, herring and sardines), walnuts and flaxseed. Try two servings of the fish weekly year-round, bumping up to three servings during allergy season. Also recommended daily: 12 walnuts and a teaspoon of ground flaxseed.
- Spicy foods can help clear your sinuses. Think hot salsa, green chilies or a dash of cayenne pepper.
- Fruits high in Vitamin C are edible antihistamines and antioxidants too. Include two pieces of Vitamin C-enriched fruit in your diet daily. When congested, an orange, an apple, or servings of watermelon, grapes or strawberries could be just what the doctor ordered.
- Nuts like almonds, hazelnuts and peanuts add a delicious touch to your dishes and can also help minimize inflammation as good sources of Vitamin E.
- Black tea contains flavonoids, an antioxidant from water-soluble plant substances, that can relieve your immune system. Green tea is also a source of antioxidants and reduces the production of histamine.
- Don’t forget foods high in zinc, which feed antibacterial and antiviral effects. How about a half dozen oysters or shrimp each week – and more often when allergies are in full swing? During those times, try a serving of whole grains and beans too.
While you’re adding foods to your diet to improve your allergy symptoms, you’ll also want to keep in mind some food groups to avoid. Milk products are at the top of the list because they can cause a thickening of mucus in the nasal cavities. A glass of milk, slice of cheese or cup of yogurt can actually make you feel more stopped up. Also, sodas with caffeine and alcoholic drinks dehydrate the body and can make symptoms worse. Hydrate your body instead with eight glasses of water a day.

McKinney AC Repair Service gives thoughts on humidity in your home.
McKinney AC Repair Service owner Steve Lauten, President of Total Air and Heat, gives thoughts on humidity in your home.
Humidity – too little and your lungs feel like you’re in a desert, too much and it can feel like you’re walking under water. Why the big deal about a little water? Well, too much humidity isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s unhealthy. Mold and mildew thrive and can cause serious air quality issues in your home. The key for your comfort (and your home’s well-being) is finding the right balance. Sometimes that means using a dehumidifier to keep the moisture outside from taking over inside.
So what kind of dehumidifier is right for you? A lot depends on the area with the moisture problem…
LARGE SPACES
If you’ve got a whole house humidity problem then your best bet may be a dehumidifier that attaches directly to your heating and cooling system. These systems can be more expensive, but worth it if you’re waging a serious water war.
SINGLE ROOMS
Many manufacturers offer dehumidifiers that treat just one room, say a bedroom or office. These models usually remove anywhere from one to three pints of water from the air per hour, and can be a good solution for problem areas.
SMALL SPACES
Humidity that builds up in closets can cause serious problems for the adjoining walls. Small heaters designed for long-term use (and cheaper to operate than a 100-watt light bulb) can keep the temperature of the closet above the dew point which keeps mold and mildew at bay.
Sure, we all need water – and even a little humidity is a good thing. But when there’s too much water in your home’s air, it’s not good for you, your home, or your wallet (long-term exposure to moisture can lead to expensive repairs). So give us a call if you want to start breathing a little easier today.

Allen AC Repair Service offers tips for routine maintenance.
Allen AC Repair Service owner Steve Lauten, President of Total Air and Heat, offers tips for routine maintenance.
Routine air conditioning tune-ups are among the best home investments you can make. That’s because tune-ups improve your systems efficiency and increase its lifespan, saving you operating dollars, postponing replacement dollars and keeping you comfortable at the same time. Not only that, you can avoid problems with mold build-up that can harm your breathing space.
It’s the same principle as routine dental cleaning and annual medical appointments. Nothing’s wrong, and you want to keep it that way. But some folks let the “ounce of prevention” opportunity pass right on by, thanks to a misguided impression that it’s just too much trouble.
Yet tune-ups are simple and quick and very much worth a very minor inconvenience that can save you a good bit of time and money in the long run.
Basically, a licensed professional will:
- Clean condenser coils as needed, and clean outside unit.
- Check all electrical components and controls, measure volts and amps.
- Lubricate outdoor fan motor where accessible.
- Measure compressor starting capabilities.
- Inspect drain pans and blow out condensate drain as needed.
- Inspect thermostat operation.
- Check to see if the system is properly charged with refrigerant and that there are no leaks.
- Check filters. (Filters should be replaced monthly.)
Oh, and you can keep a watch on this on your own. While many homeowners choose to shade their condensers with trees and shrubs to improve efficiency, you’ll want to watch to make sure vegetation doesn’t grow around the condenser and restrict the air flow. Most tune-up tasks are too extensive for the average homeowner – because of the risk of electrical shock and the potential for shorting in the electrical components. But one of our techs can tend to these things in a very short time.
Think of it as a way to save money while avoiding a whole lot more trouble later on. Equipment failure in the heat of August is never as fun as a preventive measure taken in springtime!

Frisco AC Repair Service owner offers a Spring 2010 message.
Frisco AC Repair Service owner Steve Lauten, President of Total Air and Heat, offers a Spring 2010 message:
I hope this message finds you well and ready for the first signs of spring. We’re enjoying a breath of fresh air ourselves after a very busy season of keeping our customers comfortable. There’s nothing more important to us than the work we do for you. Put this in the category of news you’d expect. The Better Business Bureau recently issued a list of the top scams and rip-offs from last year. It was full of schemes involving work-at-home offers, job-hunting, debt assistance, very “pricey” sweepstakes winnings, and government grants. Sadly, many of these schemes have in their heart the worst possible motives – taking advantage of people who are having a tough time in a tough economy.
- There are a couple of lessons here.
One is the one our parents taught us: if it sounds too good to be true, it is. - And the other is this: it’s best to do business with people you trust.
Every day, we work hard around here to put our best foot forward for you, and we place a very high value on the trust you place in us. Thank you for that. So as you enter this new season and look forward to warmer days, let us know how we can help. Hopefully we’ll see you soon for your pre-season tune-up.
That’s the best way to make sure your system is ready for the heavy summer use – and we can also give you tips on how you can improve your energy efficiency while we’re there. So give us a call. We’re here to help, whenever you need us.
Steve Lauten, President
P.S. Please pass along our name – and even this newsletter – to your friends, and we’ll give them our best service and value too.

Plano AC Company offer Solar Air Conditioning and Heating System
Plano AC Company offer Solar Air Conditioning and Heating System. Written by Steve Lauten-Total Air & Heat Co. Plano, TX
This is a series of articles I am writing that covers issues that impacts your health and comfort in your home or office.
In this article I will cover the Lennox SunSource Air conditioning and heating system. Earlier this year Lennox announced they were introducing a complete series of air conditioners and heat pumps that were solar ready. In addition you could install solar panels at the same time as you installed your new a/c & heat system, or you could add the solar panels later.
In my opinion…this is a brilliant idea because some consumers may want the option of solar at a later date but don’t want to invest in solar at this time. By creating a solar ready a/c and heating system Lennox has positioned themselves as one of the most “Green” manufacturers of home comfort systems and the only manufacturer offering a turnkey package of a/c & heating systems with solar panels and all the necessary installation components.
Lennox will offer the SunSource Home Energy System in 2 different efficiencies. There will be a 17 SEER series and a 21 SEER series. The 17 SEER series is available effective 6/1/2010 and the 21 SEER should be available by 7/1/2010. Both series will be available in an air conditioning with gas furnace version, a heat pump version, and a dual fuel version.
A home survey needs to be done to insure the SunSource is a good fit for your home. Things that need to be considered: does the site have good southern exposure, is the roof in suitable condition to mount solar panels, how far away will the solar panels be mounted from the air conditioner?
Other things to be considered are there any Home Owners Association restrictions and does a plan need to be submitted for approval? I have been researching this matter in anticipation of the SunSource system being introduced. In Texas it appears any restraints on the use of Solar are likely to be overturned in the next few years. The bottom line is Home Owners Associations will not be able to restrict the use of solar panels if proposed legislation is approved.
There are several very unique aspects of the SunSource system. This includes:
- This is not a grid independent system. It will not generate power when the grid is down, nor will it produce power in conjunction with a back-up generator.
- You can install the SunSource base a/c and heat system and qualify for the $1,500 federal tax credit. In addition you can install the necessary solar panels to qualify for the federal tax credit of 30% of the solar panel installation cost. Each SunSource system is capable of using up to 15 Solar panels per unit. Depending on your location the SunSource system is capable of generating up to 110% of the electricity necessary to operate the a/c and heat system in “Region 2″ which includes the Central Texas region. In addition, when no a/c or heat is running it will back feed your electrical system generating free electricity.
- The SunSource Home Energy System has an optional SolarSync Package which is required when you install the solar panels. This package includes the necessary subpanel for the outdoor unit, solar installation modules and mounting kit, and a communications module and online monitoring of your systems performance.
There are many other aspects of the Lennox SunSource home energy System that we would like to discuss with you. We offer free…no obligation estimates. Call us today at 972-881-0020 and set an appointment to see how a Lennox SunSource Solar Air Conditioning and Heating System can provide you with the simplest way to bring money-saving solar power into your home.

Allen TX AC Repair Service offers the Top 5 Ways To Save Money
Allen TX AC Repair Service offers the Top 5 Ways To Save Money While Cooling Your Home This Summer:
Spring is here and the impending heat is definitely on everyone’s mind. Whether you’re wondering if your unit can make it another summer or you’re just wondering how to pay the bills, there are things you can do to prepare ahead of time.
Total Heat and Air gives the Top Five Hints for staying Comfortable this summer and saving money:
1. Tune-ups- These aren’t just for cars. By spending about $75-$100 dollars on a professional tune-up you might be saving yourself a lot of money. The money you save on this service will save you money by extending the life of your unit and allowing it to run more efficiently.
2. Clean Air Filters- This is simple but often forgotten money saver. Cleaning your air filters routinely can help increase the efficiency of your unit. For standard one inch filters clean or change them every month in the summer. Pleated filters need only be changed every 60 days and four to five inch pleated filters need only be changed every 6-12 months.
3. Good Attic Ventilation- Your attic temperatures can easily reach 125 degrees. That heat will affect your home. Make certain your attic has enough air intake form the vents, being certain they are free of debris. Some options to look into may be wind turbines and power ventilators.
4. Proper Attic Insulation: Your home may have started out with proper insulation in the attic but over time this wears down and new insulation is needed. Furthermore, attic door covers are becoming increasingly popular to help seal your attic.
5. Duct Leakage- Homes in the Dallas area generally have all of the duct work in the attic. Get an AC repair professional to check your duct system for leakage. Oddly enough, those systems where Duct tape was used probably has not stood the test of time. The glue in the duct tape can break down causing the tape to fall away. The required tape now is called Mastic Sealer.
If you have any questions about our top five hints, please contact Total Air & Heat Co. at 972-881-0020 and speak with Steve Lauten. We will be happy to schedule a free estimate to upgrade your current AC unit and seal your duct system, or perform a tune-up.

Allen Air Conditioning and Heating offers tips on marketing
Allen Air Conditioning and Heating owner Steve Lauten has talks about how he markets his family owned business.
Seeing how someone runs there business can give you insight into whether you want to hire that company to work for you. In this article we review a speech that owner, Steve Lauten gave to a professional group of peers.

How do you market your business?
There are many different kinds of marketing. While watching the Super Bowl you may have noticed commercials from various vendors such as mortgage companies. This is called interruption marketing. The theory behind it is to interrupt the thought you are having such as the football game and make you think about mortgages. Seems unlikely but it is a widely used technique.
One of the most common marketing techniques for the service industry is the yellow pages and or Direct Mail. This can be very costly for the advertisers, just how many yellow page companies are out there? Plus, most of receive mass quantities of junk mail, coupons and flyers on our front doors. You have to wonder how much of that lands up in the garbage and what is your rate of return on that type of marketing.
Then there is the door to door salesman or what can be jokingly called “invasion marketing”. Most of the door to door sales have gone by the wayside except for your occasional Girl Scout.
Then of course is the internet. Websites, email newsletters and social media marketing are all widely used.
A new method out there is now “Permission Marketing”. It first starts by getting the permission of the customer to learn more information. Instead of bombarding the customer with your advertising, it’s more of a slow process. Give them little tantalizing tid- bits and then ask them permission to give more information. You can slowly turn their interest into permission to hear more, than they can learn more than hopefully buy. This can be highly effective in commercial HVAC companies.
Do you include your employees as part of your marketing plan? The first voice a customer hears when they pick up the phone could make or break a sale. Are you adequately rewarding the person who answers the phone to get that customer? What about sales technicians? They are face to face with your customers every day. Do they do a good job at portraying the company culture? You can reward your employees through excellent training and incentives.
Whichever type of marketing you choose to use, track your outcome. Come up with a marketing plan in writing and track your leads. How many calls came from the internet, how many calls were word of mouth? Then at the end of the year you’ll know where to put your money the next year. This may change year to year so keep tracking and revising your paln.

Plano Airconditioning and Heating Company talks about summer heat.
Plano Airconditioning and Heating Company talks about summer heat.
In 2007 Steve Lauten, President of Total Air and Heat in Plano spoke to his colleagues at an industry meeting and this is what he shared.
Whether you own your own HVAC repair company or you are interested in how to choose a company to maintain your current system here are a few tips from a speech that owner, Steve Lauten gave for an industry organization.
Digital Refrigeration Gauges- Take a look at whether the AC repair company has digital or analog refrigeration gauges. Analog are basically obsolete for many reasons.
- Digital gauges are more accurate and zero out every time you turn them on, enabling you to get a better reading.
- Digital has the ability to record suction and liquid temperatures including multi-pressure charts right in the gauges.
- Digital has portable printers so all your data can be saved!
- With digital you can store data and input it into software to help you build a total system report
Duct Leakage Testing
Did you know the average home is losing up to 30% efficiency in duct leakage? This is widely overlooked and is something you can have your staff busy checking during winter months.
Even commercial properties should be checked for leakage. Total Heat and Air went out for a customer that had massive leakage of air. They had a lot of work to do to fix the problem including tearing down some walls, but it resolved the problem and saved them money in the long run.
IAQ Testing
Indoor air quality tests will test particles, VOC’s, temp and humidity. Total Air and Heat offers this to customers for free. Often times a customer will blame their HVAC system for things such as humidity; however these Air Quality tests can often point to structural problems as the culprit.
Since offering all these tests, we have increased our off season business for: hi-efficiency air filters, duct work, new thermostats and zone damper systems. So not only have we kept our staff busy in off season but we have really been able to provide a comprehensive service to our clients.
