McKinney AC Repair Service owner asks… what is next?

McKinney AC Repair Service owner Steve Lauten reports: We Beat the Heat, Heated The Country, and Blitzed Habitat For Humanity. What’s Next?

Every year Steve Lauten devotes much of his personal energy to helping those members of his profession that are struggling to learn more about how to build a better business. Having higher quality standards, better trained employees, and presenting a better image to the public helps all of the members of the Air Conditioning Contractors Association. Higher quality providers do a better job for customers and everyone benefits. Here is a note that Steve circulated to local members encouraging voluntary participation in the local industry association that promotes these goals.

Let me begin by saying thank you to Everyone who helped with any of our CSF Projects this year.  As an organization we had a huge impact on our communities this Spring-Habitat for Humanity Blitz, this summer-Beat the Heat window unit installations, and this fall-Heat the Country.  It still amazes me how much of a difference we can make on our Community when we get involved in helping those less fortunate than us.  We just finished up the kick off for Heat the Country and serviced over 150 heating systems between Dallas and Tarrant Counties.  We still have some systems that need parts and additional service calls that need to be taken care of.  If you missed out on the kick off, please give the ACCA-NTX office a call and let them know you are available to help.

So What’s Next?  We just finished up a really hot summer where all of us should have made a fair profit.  So it’s time to take care of our Industry and the employees that makes it possible.

What can you do for the Industry?  Support ACCA-North Texas Chapter and TACCA by donating to the PAC Fund.  The Political Action Committee needs your donations to get ready for the next Legislative Session that begins in 2007.  There is a multitude of issues on the horizon, including Technician Licensing.  Now that Plumbers and Electricians have licensed technicians/journeyman and helpers you can rest assured HVAC is the next target to generate revenue for the State of Texas.  The bottom line is our destiny as HVAC Contractors is up to us.  If we want a say in what happens we need to have enough money in our PAC Fund to support or fight whatever comes up this session.  I strongly urge you to make a donation via cash or personal check (no business checks allowed) to the TACCA PAC fund.

What can you do for your employees?  Training, Training, Training!  ACCA-NTX has all kinds of training to meet every employee’s needs and skill level.  Check this newsletter or www.acca-ntx.org for our training schedule.

What can you do for yourself?  Each of us is at different paths in the life cycle as business owners/managers.  I attend all types of business and sales training every year, and even though I have already attended most of these classes multiple times I still walk away learning something.  What makes our profession any different that pilots or professional athletes?  They attend training every year too, and so should you.

In closing, our Industry is only as good as the worst Contractor out there doing business.  I don’t know about you, but that scares me a lot!  The good news is there something we can do about it.  Do you know a Contractor or Associate that could benefit form what ACCA has to offer?  The please invite them to one of our meetings.  We will let them attend for free and check us out.  In the process, that competitor just might learn something that could make all of our lives easier.
